Cost to Start

Low to medium

Pickleball is known for having a very approachable entry cost compared to many other sports, as the list of required gear is brief.

What You Need to Play

One of the appealing aspects of pickleball for beginners is the minimal equipment requirement. To get started, you only need four core things.

1. Paddle

Unlike stringed tennis rackets, pickleball uses a solid paddle. These are typically made from lightweight composite materials or wood. Beginners can easily start with basic models that provide good control and a forgiving surface area.

2. Ball

The sport requires a specific perforated plastic ball. These balls are durable, lightweight, and designed to have a controlled flight path. They are widely available and come in bright, easy-to-see colors.

3. Court Access

You will need a place to play. A proper court features specific dimensions and the crucial non-volley zone lines. Many public parks, community centers, and recreational facilities now offer dedicated courts or multi-use courts with pickleball lines.

4. Comfortable Shoes

Because the game involves quick lateral movements and sudden stops, wearing supportive, comfortable athletic shoes is essential for comfort and safety on the court.
